Frequently Asked Questions
How old does my child have to be to use the sewing machine? 8 years old and up. However, we make some exceptions for 7- year-olds who have been assessed and deemed ready.
Does my child need to take hand sewing before machine sewing? Hand sewing is a great life skill, but it is not a prerequisite for machine sewing. If your child is at least 8 years old, they can begin with either. For young ones, beginning with hand sewing helps build confidence and dexterity before moving on to the machine.
Can I take class with my child? Yes! It’s a great way to spend quality time with them and learn a new skill together.
Can boys take sewing classes? Of course! We welcome everyone!
Can I drop my child off? Yes! We supervise students at all times.
Is sewing dangerous? It can be, but we put safety first at all times. They will be trained on the do's and don’ts during their lesson, so you can breathe easy.
Can you accommodate students with allergies or special needs? Definitely! Just let us know the specifics before signing up for classes and we’ll figure out the best method of teaching together.
Can I bring my own sewing machine? For group classes, you can bring your own sewing machine if it is similar to the Brother Innovis 40. If it’s a different model, you can only bring it for private lessons.
Do I need to bring fabric & sewing supplies? Nope! We have everything you need here. Each class has high-quality fabric and supply kits integrated into class and party fees. All other supplies, such as pins, scissors, etc. are provided.
How big are classes? Classes range from 3 students minimum to 20 students maximum. Classes that do not meet the minimum are subject to cancellation, and registered students will be refunded or receive credit towards a future class. Intro to Sewing Machine classes are almost always at capacity, so reserve early!
*Student to teacher ratio is 6 to 1 for sewing, crochet, and knitting classes and 12 to 1 for drawing and design classes.
Do I need to take Intro to Machine Sewing before taking intermediate classes if I already know how to sew? Intermediate level classes require students to be able to thread their machines, wind a bobbin, pin, and sew with a consistent seam allowance independently and safely. Students who sign up for advanced classes without proper prerequisite skills will have their registration canceled without a refund.
When in doubt, contact us to discuss your student’s skill level.
Can I schedule a private class or lesson? Yes. Private one-on-one lessons are $75 an hour.
How do I change or cancel a class after I’ve registered? When notified in advance, we can provide credit for a future class at Camp Fashionista if you have to withdraw a registration. Credit given this way expires after one calendar year. No call/no shows will not be refunded.
